Start Right Now!

How often have you heard things like, “when is the best time to plant a tree?”  The traditional answer is, “20 years ago.”  The moral being, if you had, you would have shade or fruit by now.  The proverb continues, “the second-best time is now.”

That is an “if everything goes right,” answer.  What if drought got it before it had developed a reliable root system, what if you planted it in infertile soil, what if it caught a disease, what if the kids trampled it while playing, etc.  You have no control over what happened 20 years ago and every day since up to today. Possibly the land you planted the tree on did not even belong to you.

It seems many people get hung up on the first half of the proverb and don’t consider the second half as the most important and inspiring.

There are so many things that happened in our past that we insist on beating ourselves up over. Events you are unable to do anything about now.  We should put the past in the appropriate compartment and move on.  When we do consider our personal history, it should be about learning life lessons to improve our today, allowing us to move forward stronger and better. We should not be seeking ammunition to tear ourselves down.  Yet how often do we beat ourselves up with the “ouda,” triplets?  You know them as “woulda, shoulda, coulda.”

What you can control is what you do right now, today, the next item on your list.  Bury your regrets about what you didn’t do, couldn’t do or weren’t allowed to do where they belong.  In the past, gratefully accept and apply the lesson and let it go.  It’s time to move on.

When’s the best time to begin a new project?  Start right now!

When should you begin planning that big move?  Start right now!

When should you open that business?  Start right now!

Starting now does not mean you should spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on your idea.  It’s not about quitting your present job or moving halfway across the country.  What it does mean is start planning.  Look at options.  Consider the pros and cons.  Even something as fundamental as making a list.  Starting is not committing all your resources to the idea, but it does involve getting the idea out of your head and on to paper where you can reference past ideas, improve concepts, gather input and share your dream.  Remember, the best time is now.

“A goal in your head is, at best, a dream.  Don’t let your dream turn into a nightmare of regret.”
